Indicators
Some bryophyte species and communities can be used as environmental indicators. For example if you see bryophytes growing on leaves of trees or bushes, this is a clear sign of a sheltered, humid and usually relatively clean atmosphere.
 

Wherever these phenomena, are found, there are usually vulnerable ecosystems, often containing many threatened bryophytes.
