Background
In 2002, the government commissioned the Swedish Species Information Centre to implement the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative. The purpose was to make a complete survey of all multicellular Swedish species by means of inventories, taxonomical research on poorly known organism groups and publication of identification handbooks. This project, which was initiated in 2002, is scheduled to run until 2025. It also comprises extensive support and subsidies to the Swedish Biological Museums.
The production and publication of a series of identification handbooks in Swedish: "The Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna", forms the popular science component of this project, whereas the scientific component consists of funding for inventories and taxonomical research on poorly investigated organism groups. The support program targeting the Biological Museums is also part of the scientific component of the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative. It aims at, e.g., enabling the museums to take care of the material generated by the aforementioned inventories, to make the collections accessible in public databases, and to strengthen the taxonomical competence of the museums with regard to poorly known organism groups.
The Swedish Taxonomy Initiative comprises extensive cooperation between all Swedish institutions and museums conducting taxonomical research and/or harbouring biological collections.
