STI’s Research School of Taxonomy and Systematics
This educational project aims at offering courses in taxonomy and systematics to PhD students. The courses are arranged in cooperation with Swedish universities and natural history museums. They focus primarily on taxonomical methods and poorly investigated organism groups (comprising e.g. nomenclature, scientific Latin, morphological studies, illustration and microscopy techniques, scientific publication, preservation of biological material and bioinformatics).
The courses are free of charge. All PhD students – primarily from Sweden and the other Nordic countries, but also from abroad – are welcome to partake in the courses, but PhD students funded by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative are given priority. These students may also have their travel and accommodation expenses covered by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative.
The basic funding for the PhD students comes from Swedish Taxonomy Initiative’s grants for taxonomic research. So far, funding has been granted for twelve PhD students, two of which have already graduated.
Courses arranged by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative
Meiofauna – morphology, phylogeny and inventory techniques, September 2007 (in cooperation with the University of Gothenburg)
Basic taxonomy, April 2008 (in cooperation with the University of Gothenburg and the Natural History Museum in Gothenburg)
Species trees from Gene Trees, June 2008 (organized by the University of Gothenburg, partly funded by the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative)
Illustration Techniques, 2009 (in cooperation with the University of Gothenburg)
Bioinformatics and Databases, 2009 (in cooperation with the Swedish Natural History Museum)
